Bathrooms are not always given the time and consideration they need to create something individual as well as functional. At NSI we plan the bathroom lighting at an early stage as we are often faced with areas with little or no natural light and where conventional lighting is often too stark or dark. As bathrooms are a place to relax and recharge, complete with rainfall showers and spa tubs, the lighting requires this extra thought.

A bathroom lighting plan is a series of layers, by placing ample light where it is needed for showers, shaving, or putting on makeup and using other light sources you will enhance the overall mood of the room.

NSI’s first consideration is vanity lighting as these fixtures work the hardest to illuminate the head and face for grooming. Vertical lighting from the either side of a mirror gives a much clearer and even light across the face rather than overhead lighting that will produce shadows.

At NSI we think more creatively in our choices, suggesting to clients they consider a pendant lamp or cove lighting which adds a soft glow around the perimeter of the room by the use of a led strip or rope light. This works particularly well in bathrooms with little or no natural light and NSI have used this on several of our projects to create perfect results.

In addition a small recessed or plaster-in spotlight directed at a piece of decorative art creates another layer of light in the bathroom or perhaps to highlight beautiful tilework or fixtures and make them sparkle.
